The children's program is one of the most basic health programs and its purpose is to provide, maintain and improve the health of children, reduce the burden of priority diseases and mortality rates and improve their nutrition through the provision of health services. The overall goals of this program are to reduce infant and child mortality under the age of five and to improve the health of children under the age of six.

The experiences and skills of a child between the ages of 6- 8 when they enter school are critical to their ability to learn during their education. Therefore, child care, support, education, optimal growth and development of the child begin after the time of fertilization, and not only the care of the child but also the care of the mother is important for the survival, growth and development of the child. To achieve the mentioned cases, children's program in the main sections is as the following:

  • Integrated care of a healthy child
  • Integrated care of pediatric diseases (MANA)
  • Accidents and disasters
  • Promoting breastfeeding
  • Child mortality care system from 1 to 59 months
  • Child development screening

Numerous studies have shown that by improving the quality of health services and greater participation of families, it is possible to improve the health of children and reduce their mortality rate. Therefore, new strategies called Integrated Care of Pediatric Diseases (mana) and Integrated Care of Healthy Children were proposed by the Department of Children of the Ministry of Health, which combines different programs, includes the most important and most common causes of child mortality, and enables the correct diagnosis and treatment of diseases based on the available symptoms. Integrated care means diagnosing the disease using simple clinical signs and experimental treatment. The least possible clinical signs are used.

The children's program also contains guidelines for educating mothers so that families can participate in the improvement of their child. So, they can reduce the incidence or severity of diseases with proper implementation of preventive measures of accident, proper nutrition of the child, and timely vaccination. The program also engages families in home treatment to minimize the risk of the child becoming ill or ignoring the signs of danger during the illness, so families can take advantage of missed opportunities to provide primary preventive services.

Promoting breastfeeding is another part of this program, as one of the strategies adopted by UNICEF that has led to a revolution in child health is breast milk. Breastfeeding is a unique way to provide proper nutrition for the optimal growth and development of infants and is a complementary part of the reproductive process with very important effects on maternal health.

Also, the study of child mortality by identifying the factors involved in mortality and other factors underlying the death of infants and children from one to fifty-nine months in order to find appropriate interventional strategies is another goal of this office.

It has been found that the most important period of a child's brain development is in the first two years of life, which plays a significant role in the mental, psychological, social and safety functioning of the child in the future. The experiences of child in the third to fifth years of life prepare him/ her for the acquisition of social skills and learning during school, so it is very important to pay attention to screening of the development of children in the first years of life.
