Due to rapid advances in science, especially medical sciences, and continuous changes in preventive measures to rehabilitate patients, the need to review the ultimate goals of education and training has been strongly emphasized. The future of Iran needs people who can solve the country's problems creatively and as a group. The missions of universities are to identify, guide and nurture students' scientific talents.
In addition, medical universities are important for sustainable development. They must train the required human resources and produce knowledge in the field of health. Also, they must train qualified managers to lead the health system and align the movements and decisions of this system with the general direction of development in the country. Unfortunately, medical universities have no plans to develop problem-solving skills and teamwork in the health system. In fact, the traditional teaching method in universities often provides students with a mixture of information and concepts, but it will leave them alone in analyzing, prioritizing and organizing new knowledge that requires critical thinking which leads to effective and meaningful learning.
One method to solve this problem is to design national competitions in which problem-solving skills as a team are among its values. Various studies have been conducted on the effect of scientific Olympiads on increasing the skills of students participating in them. A study in the Netherlands on the impact of the Mathematical Olympiad on the development of students' mathematical talents showed that the students who participated in Olympiads were successful in their university education and published articles and books on mathematics. The Olympiads also boosted their confidence and helped them in their future careers. So, participating in scientific competitions can contribute to personal growth and career.
The initial idea of holding this scientific competition was presented in 2000 in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. The initial steps for its design have been began since 2006. Several meetings have been held with the presence of professors, experts and students ranked in student Olympiads so far. Due to the agreement reached between most universities and officials of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education about the need to strengthen the power of thinking and reasoning among medical students, now a suitable platform has been provided for holding this Olympiad.
