Unveiling the First Medical Project Based on Artificial Intelligence of SEMUMS
Public Relations of SEMUMS:
Semnan University of Medical Sciences and Health Services unveiled the country's medical decision support system in the field of extracorporeal stone crusher based on artificial intelligence.
The director of the medical project based on artificial intelligence of SEMUMS appreciated Dr. Sayadi, Dr. Arab, Dr. Ardestani and Dr. Mir Mohammad Khani during the period of cooperation in this project. She said: the project of designing and implementing a medical decision support system based on artificial intelligence to record and analyze the data of extracorporeal lithotripsy (ESWL) procedures in the form of a technological plan in the Research Deputy of SEMUMS started in Sept. 2023.
Dr. Maliheh Sadeghi said: Since we need comprehensive and accurate information of patients in various clinical fields to obtain correct policies in the field of prevention and treatment, the lack of this information due to paper data causes challenges in gathering, storing, and analyzing data. To solve them, electronic databases and registry systems are proposed that collect data related to a specific disease, condition or action.
She continued: kidney stones and urinary tract stones are one of the most common diseases in the field of urology in our country and Semnan province, and due to the severe pain caused by them, patients have to visit a urologist frequently. Extracorporeal stone crushing or ESWL is one of the types of kidney and urinary tract stone crushing methods that is performed using external shock waves or lithotripsy as a completely non-invasive method to break stones inside the kidney and ureter tube.
She emphasized: We are the first group in the country to implement the registry system of ESWL measures. This registry system is equipped with a clinical decision support system that is designed based on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, the accuracy of which is more than 97%. In addition to recording patients' information, it supports specialists in making treatment decisions as a consultant. By using the experience of doctors in dealing with previous patients, it can make predictions about the success of new action.
She said: this system can have advantages on several levels. At the management level, the number of patients of this disease can be monitored, the statistical and epidemiological information can be displayed, the patterns and trends of the disease can be analyzed. This information can be very useful in allocating resources, human resources, and drug distribution according to the rate of patients for correct policy making.
Dr. Sadeghi stated: At the level of doctors, this system can be used as a consultant for specialists in the field of urology, especially for doctors who have just graduated, and also as an educational system for medical students and residents. This decision support system also increases the speed and accuracy of developing a treatment plan, and determines the type of patient follow-up. Also, this system can be a base and a valuable source for various scientific and applied researches in this field.
She added: This system has been implemented in the stone crusher clinic of Kosar Hospital, and other centers of the country can register their information in this system and use its features as partners. This system is the first artificial intelligence product of SEMUMS in setting up an Intelligent faculty in SEMUMS.
